Storm water is a resource and ever growing in importance as the world’s human population demand exceeds the availability of readily obtainable clean water.
Storm water is water that originates during precipitation events. Rain that falls on streets, sidewalks, houses and driveways are met by impervious surfaces, which prevent the precipitation from infiltrating into the ground.
Storm water that does not soak into the ground becomes surface runoff, which either flows directly into surface waterways or is channeled into the storm drain system.
Storm water is of concern for two main issues: One is related to the volume and timing of runoff water ( flood control and water supplies) and the other related to potential contaminants that the water is carrying, i.e. water pollution.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide inspection of Public and Private storm drain systems
- Provide access to Annual reports and MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems) permits to the State
- Provide Watershed Maps for Carson City
- Provide access to Drainage Reports for Carson City
- Provide Community Education and Outreach programs for BMP’S (Best Management Practices) and information to the public on what they can do to help improve water quality
